Understanding the relationship between lash glue, temperature, and humidity starts with understanding how adhesive works in the first place. 

Cyanoacrylate is the primary bonding ingredient in most professional lash adhesive on the market. It cures through a chemical process called polymerisation, which is triggered by moisture in the air. Environmental moisture provides the conditions needed to start this reaction, allowing the adhesive to rapidly form strong polymer chains that bond the extension to the natural lash. 

How fast that reaction happens depends on how much moisture is available. But humidity isn't the only factor. Temperature and humidity aren’t independent variables, either. A change in temperature shifts the effective humidity, and vice versa. Let’s start with the link between lash glue and humidity. 

How Humidity Affects Lash Glue Curing 

Humidity directly controls curing speed. Our Fusion adhesive cures in roughly one second at 40-65% humidity. That drops to two seconds below 40% humidity. That extra second totally changes your workflow. It cures almost instantly above 70%. Pretty small margin for error! 

The glue sets from the outside in when humidity is too high, essentially trapping uncured adhesive underneath. We call this shock curing. The bond looks solid, but it’s brittle. Extensions will begin dropping within days. 

The opposite happens when humidity is too low. Say your salon is less than 20% relative humidity. The adhesive will barely polymerise, if at all. Bonds stay tacky and wet. Extensions will slide around as you attempt to place them. They’ll fall off shortly after.

The problem is, so many new lash techs get frustrated with themselves. They think it’s bad technique. Or they blame the glue itself. But it’s as simple as installing a humidifier and keeping your climate dialed in!

Temperature Influences Lash Glue Curing, Too

There are actually two ways in which temperature influences how your lash glue cures. 

First, know that warmer air can hold more moisture. Temperature and humidity go hand-in-hand. There’s more water vapour in a room at 28°C and 50% relative humidity than a room at 18°C and 50%. Even though the hygrometer reads the same, it’s totally different curing conditions.

Then there’s the other temperature connection. Heat accelerates polymerisation independent of humidity. Cyanoacrylate reacts faster in warmer conditions regardless of humidity.

Anything colder than 18°C slows curing. The adhesive thins out above 26°C and makes it tough to control on the base of lash extensions. 

Controlling Temperature and Humidity in Your Salon

It’s clear you can’t overlook the intertwined nature of lash glue, temperature, and humidity. But keeping your salon’s environment dialed in is an ongoing battle.

The first thing you need to do is invest in a really good hygrometer. Keep it at your actual workstation. Not at the intro where the door opens and closes all day, or at the back of the salon where stale air builds up. Place the device where you’re actually using your lash glue. We’re not trying to be dramatic - the details really matter that much.

It’s just a matter of adjusting your climate once you know what you’re actually working with in terms of temperature and humidity. 

Is Your Air Too Dry? 

You’ll need a cool-mist humidifier close to your working area - but not so close that you get droplets of moisture on your adhesive or tools. If you don't have a humidifier, placing a bowl of water near a heat source can provide a small, temporary increase in humidity, although it's much less effective than using a humidifier. 

Is Your Air Too Moist to Begin With? 

You need a dehumidifier to pull some of that excess moisture out of the air. This is fairly normal in tropical climates and especially during summer. You might be able to get away with simply running the air conditioning more, as this naturally dries the air.

Managing Temperature

This is the easy one. Your reverse-cycle air conditioner  gives you the most reliable control over temperature. Just make sure you have a really good thermostat that you can trust to provide accurate readings. 

Try to avoid using space heaters. Yes, they can raise the temperature just near your working environment - but they will dry the air out, and then you have another problem to fix. 

Choosing the Right Lash Glue For Different Settings and Seasons

At a certain point, you may consider changing the adhesive you use rather than constantly trying to fine-tune your salon’s environment. Not every lash glue is made to work in the same conditions, after all. That’s why we offer multiple options at Envolash.

What Could Be Other Causes of Poor Lash Retention Beyond Environment? 

There’s no denying the connection between lash glue, temperature, and humidity. But it’s not always your environment to blame when lash retention takes a hit. There are quite a few other lash retention killers you want to watch out for:

Adhesive Freshness

There’s a shelf life for all lash glue from the moment it gets opened. Usually that’s somewhere in the range of 8-12 weeks. Our Flex and Matrix last 90 days. That’s assuming optimal storage conditions, too (somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight). Always shake for two full minutes before every use to redistribute the stabilisers.

Stale Glue Drop

You should be replacing the drop on your glue stone every 15-20 minutes. An old drop ends up with this polymerised skin on top that weakens adhesive bonds. 

Lash Prep

Your client’s natural lashes should be totally clean and oil-free before you do anything. Any sort of residual makeup, skincare products, or sebum gets in the way of the adhesive gripping the natural lash.

Client aftercare

The client isn’t always right. Sometimes their complaints about lash retention are totally self-inflicted. Ask them gently - have they been following your instructions to avoid oil-based products, stay away from excessive moisture in the first 24 hours, and rubbing their eyes? That could be to blame!

More Things to Look For in Your Lash Adhesive

It’s not just about matching the lash glue, temperature, and humidity. There are a few other things you need to look at as you source lash adhesive for your salon:

  • Fume level: Especially for longer appointments. You don’t want your clients dreading your chair. Low-fume formulas keep them comfortable over a two-hour volume set. Go with Flex or Matrix for your most sensitive clients.
  • Viscosity: This affects your control. Thinner adhesives (like Pearl and Flex) are easy to spread, and they create smaller bond points. Medium viscosity (such as Fusion and Halo) give beginners more time to adjust placement before the glue sets.
