Korean Lash Lift vs Normal: The Difference Between a Traditional and Korean Lash Lift
Whether you’re a lash artist thinking about adding Korean lash lifts to your service menu, or you simply want to understand how they differ from a traditional lash lift, this guide breaks down the key differences between a Korean lash lift vs normal lash lift. They are actually quite a bit more different than you’d think!
A normal lash lift is a semi-permanent treatment that curls natural lashes upward using a chemical solution and silicone rod. The Korean approach uses different chemicals and tools for a more subtle enhancement that serves a wider range of clients.

What is a Lash Lift in the First Place?
You need to understand what a traditional lash lift is in order to appreciate the Korean lash lift variation. Like we touched on above, it involves a chemical solution and a curved silicone rod that curls natural lashes upward and locks them in place.
The solution breaks bonds in the lash hair and reshapes them around the rod. Then, the esthetician applies a setting solution to lock that new curl in place. The end result is gorgeous lashes for 6-8 weeks. The look starts to fade as the natural lash keeps growing out.
A lot of clients pair the lift with a tint, as a pop of colour can really exaggerate the definition. That’s why we also sell a lash lift and tint kit here at Envolash.
We encourage you to learn more about the lash lift and tint vs extensions differences in our blog. In the meantime, let’s introduce the other half of our Korean lash lift vs normal lash lift comparison.
Introducing the Korean Lash Lift: Softer Enhancement, More Natural Results
The goal is the same with a little caveat: more subtle exaggeration of the natural lashes. After all, not every client wants something dramatic. A Korean lash lift uses flat silicone pads rather than a single curved rod. It involves a thickening powder blended into the lifting solution rather than glue or balm. It’s gentler and more accommodating of different clients.
We think international lash expert at Elleebana Europe Kintija Belska put it quite well. “Unlike a classic lash lift that uses glue or balm, the Korean Lash Lift relies on viscosity control, a unique powder blended with lifting lotions to hold and shape lashes.”1
Why this matters for lash artists is because they get much more control and precision with a powder-based hold, especially on uneven growth patterns. In some cases, a Korean lash lift can last longer than its traditional counterpart. It’s also better for sensitive lashes.
So What’s the Difference Between Lash Lift and Korean Lash Lift?
They’re honestly more different than they are alike. Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the Korean lash lift vs normal lash lift.
Technique and Rod Placement
The differences between lash lifts and Korean lash lifts start with rods vs pads.
Traditional lash lifts use one curved rod for the whole treatment. The curve of the rod correlates with the lash curl. Tighter rod = tighter curl. But in general, a normal lash lift leads to a very dramatic curl.
On the other hand, Korean lash lifts use two shields - the first of which is a flat pad placed near the root. Its purpose is to lift lashes straight up rather than curl them. Then, that pad gets swapped for a curved shield midway through. This is when the final shape gets set.
Solutions and Processing
You will use different solutions for creating the “hold” as well.
A normal lash lift involves thioglycolic acid (TGA). It quickly opens the hair cuticle. Processing time is 4-9 minutes for the lifting step. One key nuance between the normal lash lift vs Korean lash lift is that TGA is really aggressive, so it’s only safe to apply base to mid-shaft.
In contrast, Korean formulas use a gentler amino acid derivative that’s much closer to the natural pH of the lash hair - cysteamine HCL. Processing takes a little longer (6-14 minutes), but the solution can be applied from root to tip because the chemical is much safer.
This leads into results too, though. Being able to apply cysteamine HCL along the entire length of the lash leads to a more elongated look. Speaking of results…
Results and Curl Shape
You’ll notice a dramatic difference in looking at a Korean lash lift vs normal lash lift side by side.
A traditional lash lift has a C-curl since the lashes follow the rod’s arc. It’s a dramatic rounded look. A Korean lash lift ends up creating more of a J-shape. There’s much stronger lift from the root, but a softer curve at the tips of the natural lash.
Longevity and Aftercare
Both types of lash lifts can last around 6-8 weeks, or however long it takes for the natural lash to grow out. However, we’ve seen Korean lash lift results last as long as 8-10 weeks in clients with slower-growing lashes!
Aftercare is pretty much the same, too. Lashes must stay dry for 24 hours. No oil-based eye products or waterproof mascara allowed. One other difference worth being aware of is that the cysteamine solution used in a Korean lash lift will leave natural lashes feeling much softer, whereas the TGA used in traditional lash lifts might cause a little dryness or brittleness.
Best Candidates For Each Type
Traditional lash lifts can still have a place in your salon. They’re a good fit for clients who want a really dramatic, pronounced curl. But the client must have strong, healthy lashes. On the other hand, try the Korean lash lift for:
- Short, straight, or hard-to-grip lashes
- Thick, coarse, or downward-growing lashes
- Sensitive eyes or skin
- Clients wanting natural elongation over dramatic curl
- Clients recovering from extensions
In our experience, clients with thick, coarse, or downward-growing lashes who haven’t seen good results with a normal lash lift will benefit most from the Korean lash lift style. But really, anyone who wants a gentler, more subtle appearance should give it a shot!

Frequently asked questions

It really comes down to the tools and solutions used, and what that means for how dramatic the curl ends up being. Korean lash lifts are gentler and more subtle, while traditional lash lifts are a little more aggressive and bolder.
Are Korean lash lifts worth it?
Absolutely! They’re quickly becoming one of the most requested services in salons across Australia. Any esthetician should know how to do them.
How do I get started offering this service?
Grab a Korean lash lift starter kit, practise on a model, and familiarise yourself with the two-shield technique. It’s pretty easy.
